Acne scar Treatments Types

Acne Scars are caused as a result of complications with a spot, pimple or nodule becoming infected and/or skin tissue becoming damaged. Scarring can be reduced and prevented by following certain steps during acne: avoiding picking, squeezing or rubbing spots as well as not washing with anything abrasive, benzoyl peroxide creams are also helpful in the treatment of acne and reduction of scars.

A certain amount of scarring is always likely to occur as a result of acne and some treatment will be needed to reduce the appearance of scars. There are many products and procedures that can be used as acne scar treatments, types of treatments are available to people no matter how serious the scarring is however the milder the scarring the easier the scars will be to eliminate.

Types of acne scar treatment

You should seek advice from a dermatologist about the best methods of acne scar treatments, types of treatment available to you will be determined as a result of the seriousness and the type of scar. The common types or treatment available include:

  • Laser treatment
  • Dermabrasions
  • Chemical peels
  • Punch techniques
  • Subcision

Some forms of treatment are reserved for milder scarring and will have little effect on deep scars; the common treatments for shallow and mild scars include laser treatment, dermabrasions and chemical peels.

There are two types of laser treatment procedure available ablative laser treatment and non-ablative laser treatment. Ablative laser procedures involve removing a patch of skin which is surrounding the scar so that a new smoother section of skin can be produced.

The method of non-ablative laser treatment involves using the laser to stimulate growth of a type of protein known as collagen, this helps to repair some of the damage and improve the appearance of the scar.

Dermabrasions work by removing a layer of skin using laser or a special kind of wire brush, the layer of scarred tissue is removed to reveal a smoother layer. Dermabrasion procedures will leave the skin looking red and sore for several months afterwards but the appearance will improve after this time.

Chemical peels are common amongst acne scar treatments, types differ but the overall aim is to remove a layer skin by using a high potency acid. The chemicals work to remove the damaged tissue from the skin and leave a smoother appearance, chemical peels are usually carried out over 6-12 sessions before results are seen.

Punch techniques are surgical kinds of acne scar treatments, types of punch technique are:

  • Punch excision
  • Punch elevation
  • Punch replacement

Punch excisions are used in the treatment of ice pick scars and involves surgically removing the scar and closing the wound, once the wound has healed a more even area of skin will be present

Punch elevations are common treatment for boxcar scars; this involves removing the base of the scar and then lifting the base up to the level of the surrounding skin.

Punch replacement is used for heavy scarring and involves removing the scar and filling the wound with a new piece of skin grafted from elsewhere on the body.
